Your First Day On arrival, you will be greeted at an orientation meeting by our UMAP staff. At this meeting, you will receive an orientation packet that will contain a therapy schedule for the first week, as well as general information about the program and Ann Arbor. If any of your paperwork remains incomplete, this will be a time to finalize it. You will also have the opportunity to talk with your team of speech-language clinicians about your goals. Following a tour of the facility, you will begin your therapy program. Therapy Your days will be spent in intensive, innovative, and hands-on therapy, working on individualized goals designed for you by your team of speech-language clinicians. Your therapy schedule will consist of individual therapy and group therapy, computer lab sessions, group music and art therapy as well as attendance at a weekly dinner club. Individual music and art therapy can be scheduled to augment your program. To reinforce therapy goals, your clinicians will provide you with daily homework. We will also arrange routine breaks in your day to allow you to rest in our dayrooms.
Recreation The city of Ann Arbor is an interesting community with lots to offer. Take a look at the Ann Arbor Area Convention and Visitors Bureau website for detailed community information. Our UMAP Services Coordinators will also assist you in locating community resources. The University has a wonderful recreational facility that includes both a pool and a gym that can be made available to you.
The UMAP Service Coordinators will plan a number of special activities designed to be fun and to promote social-interactional contexts for building communication skills, for example scavenger hunts, trivia contests, and weekly ice cream socials. A weekly dinner club is scheduled for all UMAP clients and their families and offers excellent opportunities for client to practice communicating in a restaurant and with unfamiliar listeners. Weekends are a time to visit interesting local attractions such as attending a University of Michigan sporting event or visiting a cider mill. Visits also are scheduled in the Detroit area. These social and recreational outings provide an important adjunct to the therapy program, allowing clients and families opportunities to continue working on language use in natural environments similar to those they will experience when they return home. Research As one of the founding academic programs in speech and hearing sciences, research associated with the Center has a rich history of contributing to the knowledge base in human communication. Research with UMAP clients enables us to better understand and improve clinical practices in aphasia intervention.
Health Service Before leaving home, please remember to bring an adequate supply of your prescription medication. During your stay, the medical staff from the University Health Services will be happy to assist you in any routine medical needs such as blood tests. All emergency services will be provided through the University of Michigan Health System. Meals The noon meal offers a wonderful opportunity to practice your communication skills with others. Our facility has a dining room with a kitchen facility that allows you stay on-site during lunch. For your convenience, we coordinate a lunch program with a local restaurant, at an additional charge. You also have the option of bringing in your own lunch. There is a refrigerator for any cold food items and a microwave for heating. In the Center Our house is your house. We strive to make your stay a comfortable one. All of our clients have access to a lounge with cable TV, study space, and private space with beds for rest periods. Clients and caregivers also have access to the computer lab when not used for therapy, as well as a hookup for laptops in the resource library and computer lab. All areas of the Victor Vaughan building are non-smoking. Clothing Southeast Michigan has four beautiful seasons. Feel free to contact us for guidance in the proper clothing for the season in which you will be attending the UMAP. Casual attire is suitable for your daily therapy. However, you may wish to bring clothing suitable to recreational or social activities in which you choose to participate.
