Group Therapy Group Therapy is a very important component of the UMAP speech-language therapy regimen. To support the use of newly learned behaviors targeted during individual therapy into more naturalistic contexts, UMAP clients receive two hours of group therapy daily.
We cannot say enough about the importance of this supportive context for communication, especially since communication is dynamic in nature. Our client may be the only person in his or her community with aphasia. Re-learning communication skills and reinforcing new modes of social exchange in an environment with their peers improves self-confidence and increases hope. Our clients encourage each other to try new ways of communicating; and importantly, they reinforce each other’s successes. The exuberance in the group when one of them has accomplished a communicative task is uplifting for all involved! The specialized groups are based on our clients’ interests and may include travel, gardening, cooking, sports, computer technology, and more. Read a profile on UMAP's cooking group to see how clients are able to work on redeveloping their communication and other life skills while having cooking and having fun.
