Research at UMAP
By participating in research, persons with aphasia have made lasting contributions to the understanding and treatment of this complex disorder of human communication.
Research at UMAP focuses on improving assessment and intervention processes for the treatment of aphasia to enhance the individual’s potential for participation in social, vocation, recreational, and educational activities. Current research projects at UMAP are described in this packet and will be discussed with you further when you arrive at UMAP.
Participation in any aphasia research project at UMAP is strictly voluntary, and you are free to withdraw from any project at any time. If you choose to participate in UMAP research, the purpose and procedures will be discussed with you and all of your questions will be answered, prior to the beginning of the study.
If you have a question regarding research at UMAP, take a look at the following list to see if it is addressed here. If it's not answered below, feel free to contact the Center at 734.764.8440 or [email protected].
Common Questions and Answers How will I be asked to participate in the research projects at UMAP? If there is a study going on while you are attending a UMAP session, you may be asked to participate. A research staff member will contact you and explain the project to you. You will receive a letter that explains the project to you in great detail. You will be asked to sign an informed consent form if you agree to participate. You may also be asked to sign a HIPAA authorization form, which allows the research staff to have access to your clinical file for research purposes. You will be allowed to ask any questions at that time. What if I have questions later? If you ever have questions about research during your stay at UMAP, do not hesitate to ask your clinician, clinical services manager, or the research specialist. Anyone can be reached by phone at 734-764-8440 or email at [email protected]. Do I have to take part in research projects while I am enrolled in the UMAP? If you decide to take part in any research project while enrolled in the UMAP, it should be because you really want to volunteer. You will not lose any benefits, rights, or services you normally have if you choose not to volunteer. Who will see the information that I give? Your information will be combined with information from other people taking part in the research project. When we write about the research to share it with other researchers, we will write about the combined information we have gathered. You will not be identified in these written materials. Will I receive any rewards for taking part in a study at the UMAP? No rewards are offered for participating in a study at this time.
