Caregivers are an important part of the recovery process and are most welcome at UMAP! You can become an integral part of the therapy team. At UMAP, we have a unique, conceptualized caregiver curriculum which focuses on educational goals as well as a caregiver support group which addresses psycho/social needs. We also have a list of recommended reading that may be of interest to you.

Educational Opportunities

  • Participate in seminars and workshops as formal curriculum
  • Observe and participate in your loved one's speech-language therapy sessions

Caregivers are encouraged to participate in the weekly Caring and Coping Support Group facilitated by a social worker. Caregivers will learn to adapt to their new role in life.

Psycho/Social Opportunities
  • To share personal stories about living with someone with aphasia
  • To acquire coping strategies to adjust to a new lifestyle
  • To learn to take care of yourself and maintain a social network of friends and family
  • To be realistic and hopeful about the future with your loved one with aphasia
